Elden Ring Boss Guide: How to Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood
Mohg, Lord of Blood, is one of the most formidable bosses in Elden Ring, residing deep within the Mohgwyn Palace. This battle is one of the game’s more challenging encounters due to Mohg's powerful blood magic and high damage output. This guide will walk you through the steps to locate Mohg, prepare your character for the battle, and offer strategies to defeat him.
Finding Mohg, Lord of Blood
To reach Mohg, you’ll first need to unlock the Mohgwyn Palace, located in an optional underground area. There are two main ways to access it:
Through White-Faced Varre’s Questline: This is the most direct method. Begin Varre's quest at the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes, where he will eventually provide you with the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, which teleports you to Mohgwyn Palace.
By Exploring the Consecrated Snowfield: Another option is to find the secret portal to Mohgwyn Palace hidden in the Consecrated Snowfield. To reach this area, you’ll need both halves of the Haligtree Medallion, which opens the Grand Lift of Rold.
Once inside Mohgwyn Palace, navigate through its dangerous enemies, including giant blood zombies and Albinaurics, until you reach the entrance to Mohg’s boss arena.
Preparation: Gear, Stats, and Consumables
Mohg's arena demands proper preparation, especially when it comes to defense and status ailments. Here's what you should focus on:
Gear:
- Weapons: Opt for weapons that deal Holy or Frost damage. Holy weapons like the Sacred Relic Sword are ideal since Mohg is weak to Holy attacks. Frost damage will help build up the Frostbite status effect, which temporarily reduces Mohg’s defenses.
- Shields: If you prefer blocking, bring a high-physical defense shield, but note that dodging is often a better tactic in this fight due to Mohg’s magic-infused attacks.
Stats:
- Focus on leveling Vigor to have a high health pool, which is crucial for surviving Mohg’s heavy attacks.
- Endurance helps you dodge and maintain stamina, which will be constantly taxed.
- For offensive power, Faith and Dexterity work well with Holy builds, while Intelligence can benefit magic users wielding Frost spells.
Consumables:
- Flame, Cleanse Me Incantation: This can be helpful to clear blood loss buildup, a central threat in the fight.
- Staunching Boluses: Carry these to reduce blood loss buildup, as Mohg’s attacks cause significant Hemorrhage.
- Holy-Damage Enhancers: Consider using consumables like Holy Grease or Holy-Shrouded Cracked Tear to buff your weapon with extra Holy damage.
Fight Strategy: Phases and Attacks
The battle against Mohg is divided into two distinct phases.
Phase 1: Managing Mohg’s Blood Magic
In the first phase, Mohg uses powerful blood magic attacks, many of which build up Hemorrhage. Some of his key attacks include:
- Blood Flame Slash: Mohg slashes his spear, sending out a wave of blood flame. Dodge sideways to avoid the flame’s splash damage.
- Trident Stab: He thrusts his trident multiple times in quick succession. Block or time your dodges carefully to avoid getting comboed.
In this phase, focus on evading his attacks while dealing damage when opportunities arise. Be aggressive when he’s recovering from his blood magic attacks but don’t overcommit, as he can quickly punish reckless moves.
Phase 2: Dealing with Nihil
At around 50% health, Mohg enters his second phase and casts his infamous Nihil spell. During this move, Mohg marks you with three rings of blood, and after a short delay, he’ll detonate them, dealing massive damage and restoring his health.
- Preventing Nihil Damage: The best way to mitigate Nihil's impact is by using Purifying Crystal Tear, which can be found at the Second Church of Marika. This consumable reduces the damage from Nihil’s explosion, making the transition to Phase 2 much easier.
After Nihil, Mohg becomes more aggressive, using fiery blood-based attacks. He gains additional AOE slashes and blood flame explosions that will require quick reflexes to dodge. Keep your distance and wait for moments when he’s vulnerable, such as after he completes a combo or finishes a long wind-up attack.
Victory and Rewards
Once you’ve defeated Mohg, Lord of Blood, you’ll be rewarded with 145,000 Runes and the Remembrance of the Blood Lord, which can be exchanged for powerful weapons or abilities. Mohg also drops his Great Rune, which when activated, grants a bonus to HP recovery after defeating enemies—perfect for aggressive playstyles.
Final Tips
- Summoning Spirits: Using Spirit Ashes like Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche can provide extra distractions, allowing you to land more attacks safely.
Maintain Distance: Staying mid-range during the fight lets you react to both close- and long-range attacks without being caught off guard.
With the right preparation and strategy, you can bring down Mohg, Lord of Blood, and claim victory in one of Elden Ring’s toughest battles.
